FAQs
Where does TĀCTUS meet?
All rehearsals and concerts will take place at The Old Madeleine Church - 3123 NE 24th Avenue in Portland, OR.
What level should my playing be to join?
It is important that all musicians can read music, understand rhythm and be proficient with foundational techniques on their instrument. They will be expected to cultivate a structured practice routine in order to arrive prepared for every rehearsal.
What ages does TĀCTUS admit?
Ensembles will be open to players 12 years through adulthood. Placements will keep players within similar age groups and levels.
Can I play in TĀCTUS and Orchestra?
YES! Musicians are strongly encouraged to keep on with or pursue other playing opportunities, especially orchestral programs. Playing in other ensembles will afford musicians another way to track their progress and continue to grow their skill sets.
What size are the ensembles?
Most ensembles will have around 4 players, but could have as many as 12.
Do I have to register for both sessions?
Consistency of players with chamber ensembles allows for musicians to connect the dots more quickly. That said, life happens and we must learn to be flexible, a key concept taught in music. You can register for individual sessions or you can select both. If registering for the Winter session, please know that placement will depend on whether there are spots available.
Can I play with a friend?
Yes, absolutely! If you have friends that you already have playing experience with, you can request placement with them. Please note this when you register.
How does TĀCTUS determine chamber ensemble placement?
Ensembles will be formed based on playing level. The aim is to match musicians evenly across each ensemble. This allows for the best possible musical and collaborative experience for everyone involved.
Who picks the repertoire?
TĀCTUS affords ensembles the opportunity to collaborate on a myriad of levels. One of those will be the selection of repertoire. With new group assignments, the coach takes the lead on determining what pieces would challenge, but also inspire. As players get to know one another and their voices become more distinct, they become more invested in exploring the vast library chamber music has to offer.
When will sheet music be available?
Parts and scores will be distributed shortly after ensembles have been assigned.
What do I need to bring to rehearsals?
Sheet music
Music stand
Pencil
Metronome
Rock stop (for cellists)
What is the attendance policy?
It is mandatory that all musicians can play the scheduled concerts. One excused rehearsal absence will be allowed per session. This is necessary for the cohesion of each ensemble, as most groups will have only one player per part.
